Prairie Dogs

On July 18, 2017 Evans City Council passed ordinance 670-17 regulating the existence of prairie dogs on all properties within Evans city limits.  This ordinance has been codified in chapter 6.05 of the Evans Municipal Code (EMC) and became effective on August 18, 2017.  The ordinance regulates the existence of prairie dogs on all properties within Evans city limits preventing the populations from becoming a public nuisance and health hazard.

The code (Section 6.05.020) incorporates two main tenants regarding the control of prairie dog infestation and encroachment. Subsection (b) requires that prairie dog burrows not be allowed to exceed one (1) burrow per nine hundred (900) square feet of land surface area. Subsection (c) requires the control of any prairie dog burrows within 25 feet of a public sidewalk or street. Many options are available for mitigating the populations including humane, non-lethal treatments.
